Microchip samples

I just noticed that Microchip has changed some things related to ordering samples.
There is now a $7.50 charge, and you can only get 2 device types instead of 4.

It's still a good deal in most cases.
I was always surprised that they would ship "free stuff" by FexEx from Thailand...

Even worse if you are in Europe like I am no samples anymore (maybe we get theme again after this competition ends... ).

I think charging for samples is a mistake. Compared to advertising costs and what they get from this service I think it would have been a better deal to keep it as it was. Yes it is misused. But it's better to handle the people that misuse it then everyone. I do a lot of samples because I am involved in many projects. A rep. from Texas instruments sometimes call and I have a chance to explain my needs and they also can feel safe that I don't sell the samples or whatever. Anyway it has been an excellent service and a small cost want change to much I guess for most of us.

I noticed it to.... guess current economic situation they had to recover costs somewhere, and the amount spent on shipping samples I guess is a large dollar value.

But the samples are still free!!!
Just a "Handling" charge added... basically covers shipping and that's about all.

For large businesses I guess its not much of an issue as they can possibly still get free samples through Distributors. But for hobbyists and low volume business where every penny counts it is very much not a good move, and could potentially hurt Microchip in the long run.

I would suggest using a cheaper form of shipping than the current Fed Ex, with the OPTION of paying for urgent delivery. Or even doing what MAXIM does, and do drop shipments to the nearest distributor and have them send/deliver the samples.

Yup, quite a cost, also taking in consideration that some folks abused the system for
long time selling the samples on ebay.

Because the economic situation of the country I think it's ok. But only two components is very little.

Just a guess, but I believe that if you work it out through a microchip field engineer you may be
able to get additional samples.

Microchip was being too generous giving away samples and paying for shipping while some
folks were abusing the sample program.
